Louis Armstrong, born in 1901 (July 4th or August 4th depending on who you ask) has been influencing musicians since he first picked up a cornet in the early 1900s. Generations of musicians have pointed to Louis as a major influence on how they solo, phrase, sing, etc. Many argue that Louis is one of the main reasons music went on the trajectory it went in the late 20’s through the 30s. His soloing was unparalleled at the time and musicians from Django Rheinhardt, Billie Holiday, Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, Fletcher Henderson, Benny Goodman, Glen Miller etc. all point to Louis as a giant inpiration to how they played or orchestrated their groups.
Come celebrate Louis’ 125th in the lobby of Big Blue on Tuesday, August 4th, from 7-8:30PM. We’ll be set up by the record shop in an intimate setting perfect for listening to 78s. We’ll run through choice songs Louis put out from the 1920’s through the ’50s.
ENTER IN THE BUILDING ON THE 8TH ST SIDE OF BIG BLUE. DOORS WILL BE OPEN UNTIL 8PM. FREE TO ATTEND.
The record shop will be open for 30 minutes prior and after this event to browse.
